В английском языке эти две категории существительных передаются разными словами.1. to sink — топить, затопить, утопить, погружать, понижать ( относится только к неодушевленным существительным): to sink a ship (boat) — затопить корабль (лодку)/потопить корабль (лодку); to sink a test tube in the retort — погружать пробирку в колбу The enemy sank Ihree ships last night. — Противник вчера ночью потопил три корабля. They sank the yacht in the harbour. — Они затопили яхту в гавани. Boxes with secret documents were sunk in the lake. — Ящики с секретными документами были затоплены в озере.2. to drown — топить, утопить, погружать (в прямом значении относится только к живым существам; в переносном употреблении может относиться к неодушевленным существительным, в этих случаях соответствует русскому погружать): to drown oneself — утопиться The man was found guilty of trying to drown the girl. — Мужчина был признан виновным за попытку утопить девушку. Не drowned his pancake into the syrup. — Он погрузил блин в сироп.
